Do:
Use mats where possible to protect wood from heat and moisture.
Use a good wax spray to care for leather items.
Use a micro fibre cloth to dust and clean furniture made of wood. Tackle wine and alcohol spills immediately with a damp cloth to prevent stains from settling.
Vacuum leather and upholstered furniture to prevent dust and dirt from marking the finish of the material.
Let candle wax drips dry completely before removing them with a credit card.
Be aware that prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can lead to drying and splitting of antiques. Ensure pieces are protected from too much direct sunlight by closing your curtains or moving furniture during especially sunny periods.
Be aware of the humidity of your home, especially if it is very dry or you like the heating turned up in winter. Consider using a humidifier to monitor and maintain the correct humidity at between 45% and 50%.
Dont
Place vases or other liquid containers directly on wooden furniture. Where possible, use protective mats or coasters.
Use anything solvent-based to clean up a spillage, a damp cloth applied immediately always your best remedy. Remove your table cloth every evening to ensure no unseen spills sit on the surface overnight.
Slide heavy items across the tops of furniture, as scratches are easy to make and could be expensive to put right. Experiment with domestic cleaning products if you end up with a mark or stain. There is a 99% chance you will make it worse.
